About

“A commons arises whenever a given community decides that it wishes to manage a resource in a collective manner, with special regards for equitable use, access and sustainability” (Bolliner, 2008, p.4)

We consider In Your Aerial, as an example of a form of urban commons, in that a bunch of strangers have come together, to collective work together to manage a resource (the networks infrastructure). How we doe this we are figuring out together.

To support of work, we have set up a social enterprise, we also work closely with local partners, Bristol City Council and the University of the West of England. We hold meetings, which are open to people interested in getting involved to attend.

We think of the network an inherited structure, one which was developed by people who believed in free and low-cost Internet provision and whose values are routed in open source principles, environmentally minded network solutions, where doing more with less and reusing hardware is becomes part and parcel of how to build and maintain a network.

These values stem from over 15 years of work, with learning, adventures and plots and partnerships been drawn with independent art venues and institutions such as Easton Community Centre, The Cube, Windmill Hill City Farm, Climate and Barn Camps.
